1. Introduction

1.1 The definition of buzzword

A buzzword is a word or phrase that becomes very popular for a period of time by the definition in Merriam-Webster Dictionary, although such "buzzwords" may still have the full meaning when used in certain technical contexts. Buzzwords often originate in jargon, acronyms, or neologisms. They can cross into pop culture and indeed even into everyday life (or what is called mass culture).

The origin of buzzwords is coming from business students studying at Harvard University as a way to help them gain better results from their studies. Such language terms were collated and then became what we know today as “buzzwords”. 文献综述

1.2 The purpose and significance of the research

The author, by making a research on the Chinese Internet buzzwords from the aspects of Chinese society and Chinese culture, makes attempts to explain the relationships between language and society, language and culture, and help undergraduates better understand the implications of the buzzwords.

Internet buzzword is a branch of Internet language. There are top 10 Internet buzzwords in China every year in the past few decades. With the development of the Internet, Internet language is produced, develops and spreads at an unprecedented rate, especially the Internet buzzwords. As one of the language variants, buzzwords have been gained comprehensive attention and become a hot issue in language research. People nowadays live in the environment of the Internet, and are inevitably influenced by the Cyber-culture more or less. Language is not a static semiotic system, let alone the Internet buzzwords that change constantly with the contemporary society and culture. “Language actively symbolizes the social system, thus creating as well as being created by it.” Halliday interprets language within the framework of the culture as an information system and gives his understand of the concept of “language as social semiotic” ( Halliday, 2007). The research can help undergraduates better understand the social system and modern culture.

1.3 The background of the research

According to CNNIC’s survey (China Internet Network Information Center), Internet penetration rate in China keeps increasing and has reached 48.8% by June 2015. In total, there are 668 million Netizens in China. It can be said, the development of the Internet expedients the transition from traditional culture to modern culture, which thus give birth to the Internet buzzword.

The spread of Internet buzzword is not so much due to the Internet itself as due to the real society and culture. Western scholars have studied a lot about the relationships between language and society and culture. Halliday admits that language is a kind of social behavior; it has arouse an acknowledged concern of modern linguistics and the researches are not just limited to the “the study of instances”.

In the 1970s, it was suggested that one of the primary preoccupations would be a concern with social man. It implies man is closely related to other men, as well as some abstract entity such as society as a whole. The relationship between man and his environment is a particular facet, since “it shifts the emphasis from the physical on to the human environment – on to man in the environment of men”. The inpidual identity is regarded as the center of complex human relationships that “collectively define the content of his social behavior”. This offers scholars a significant view on language. Linguistic behavior, indeed, accounts for a large part of human beings’ relation to their social environment. In Halliday’s idea, the process of the research of language and social man is supposed to base on the research of social man.
