1。 Introduction 

Language is a tool for the purpose of communication, and vocabulary is the cornerstone of language。 Therefore, vocabulary is of very importance for college students。 But, lexical fossilization often occurs in their English writing, which seriously hinders their ability of English writing。 It is very practical significance for them to analyze the phenomena of lexical fossilization, and find out the reasons and means to reduce or avoid the negative impacts of lexical fossilization in their English writing。论文网

With the rapid development of science, technology and economy, English writing plays an increasingly important role in many aspects of our studies。 As is known to all, writing is an important and necessary skill for college students。 Many college students, however, do not really understand the true importance of writing, as they just consider writing as a task of exam。 There are many mistakes in their writing, and lexical fossilization have been formed for a long time。

2。 Literature Review

Belonging to linguistic and social factors, lexical fossilization is one of important factors that influence the effects in non- English major college students’ writing。 Selinker, American linguist establishes that the theory is important in the second language acquisition theory。

Chinese scholars, like Zhang Hongyan, Zhang Wei and Jiang Hongyan, whose data analysis and quantitative study also have confirmed that the phenomena of lexical fossilization hinder the improvement of English writing level。 So, we can obviously find lexical fossilization in English writing。 

2。1 The definition of fossilization

Interlanguage was established as learners’ independent system of the second language which is neither the native language nor the second language, but a continuum or approximation from his native language to the target language。 One of the important features of interlanguage is fossilization。 A long time ago, many linguists paid close attention to fossilization。

In1972, Selinker, American linguist, firstly put forward word fossilization, which opened the study of fossilization for other linguists。 Fossilization, refers to language ability of many learners reaching a certain degree, their language ability will not improve steadily as usual, but is in a status of stagnation。 It is a process occurring from time to time in which incorrect linguistic features become a permanent part of the way a person speaks or writes a language。 This phenomenon is called fossilization in linguistics。 Fossilization are composed of lexical fossilization, syntax fossilization and pragmatics fossilization in non-English major students’ writing。 This paper mainly analyzes lexical fossilization。

2。2 The definition of lexical fossilization

Lexical fossilization is one of kinds of fossilization, lexical fossilization can be pided into temporary fossilization and permanent fossilization。 Temporary fossilization is the precursor of words, it can be eliminated through studying hard。 However, permanent fossilization tends a vicelike mode in non-English major college students’ English writing, with the growth of the age and increase of vocabulary, there is no significant effect to ameliorate the condition of lexical fossilization in their writing。 For most of the students in the university, lexical fossilization in their writing is in the phase of temporary fossilization。 Words of fossilization tend to exist as a potential way, which are eliminated on the surface, but frequently appeared in the output of learners。 I have collected from eighty English compositions from the English test band four and band six, lexical fossilization are common in non-English major college students’ writing。 非英语专业学生英语写作中的词汇石化现象分析(2):http://www.youerw.com/yingyu/lunwen_85911.html
