F·Scott Fitzgerald is one of the most distinguished and representative writers in the literature。 In his time, he revealed and recorded the social phenomenon and reality from his own perspective and thought。 He was prevailing in the 1920s, a special decade which is brimmed with the sense of loss and the postwar economic boom。 He is also called the spokesman of Jazz Age and “The Lost Generation”, and the “laureate poet of 1920s”。论文网

He had become a great novelist at that time and almost all critics became interested in the study of his works。 The reasons are as follows: one is that his works attracted scholars from all fields because he is the spokesman of that time。 He revealed the social reality and culture differences in his special thought。 Another reason is that his unique writing style and expressions are attractive。 This book has brought F·Scott Fitzgerald great fame, and made him outstanding among the writers of his age。

The Great Gatsby is a very popular novel which was published in 1925 by Fitzgerald, and today nearly all critics agree that this is a great one。 Every image, every character, every symbol, every turn of the plot contributed to the theme and the readers’ feeling, even though one may often be aware of their influence unconsciously。 As for the novel, the plot is simple and the theme of the novel is narrated in a level, anecdotal way。 When talking about Gatsby many people may think of grand house and splendid parties。 It illustrates the disappointment and frustration after the failure of American Dream, and it received the applause at that time。 Gatsby, a poor man, fell in love with a rich girl in the time when he was on his duty in the army during World WarⅠ。She loved him but gave up him and married someone else。 She didn’t know that he was penniless at first but became richer later。 She nearly gave up his husband, but she still kept being with him。 We are not to be told what is going and how Gatsby’s former love is involved in the deception。

About the author, himself, the life can be described as radically change with great success and extreme failure。 He was a legend of his own time, famous for his works and talents。 The meaning of the term “flapper” became popular in the twentieth century。 Now it mainly refers to the twentieth century。 Now it mainly refers to the femme between fifteen and twenty-five。 Fitzgerald is recognized as the spokesman of the flappers。 He had double and complicated views toward the flappers he created。 He married a real “heroine of his novels” because he was interested in such kind of women。 On the other hand, he has extreme hatred of the flappers。

After considering his views of women, we can conclude that he embodied great misogyny and hatred to flappers by the portrayal of the main plots and characters in this book。

The word “flapper” refers to the new women in the Jazz age, which is the most overindulged period in American history。 It means a young woman in the 1920s who showed off her unconventional behavior and clothes。 He shaped the Daisy class into a figure who is dependent on living and chasing after the men from the upper class。 People can not only see female moral failings but also can interpret the feminist from the social perspective。

2。 Literature review

Fitzgerald studies abroad can be roughly pided into the following stages: Fitzgerald living period, western critics have focused on the several novels of content and character image analysis。 Fitzgerald's death in 1940, not only shocked people, but also let the critics and readers interested in his work again。 Many critics, writers have memorial article published, and evaluate his literary works and his writing career from different angles。 This period of study mainly concentrated on the author's life, the artistic features of the novel and reflects the characteristics of this era。 We can finally find true representation of the original image of Fitzgerald。 The critics think he is a great literary talented writer with unique artistic style and affirmation of the historical position。 For instance, James e。 miller examined Fitzgerald’s works in various literary techniques and reflected the unique artistic styles comprehensively from his novel art perspectives。
