The results above show that majority of English teachers have realized the importance of reading teaching。 And they hold nearly the same belief that the key to improve pupil’s reading ability is let them get in touch with numerous English reading materials and it is more suitable for students in lower grades to read materials with both texts and illustrations。
The results of the questionnaire also reveal some problems。 Many teachers put too much emphasis on the accumulation of vocabulary and grammar knowledge, which makes them cancel the implement of reading teaching and emphasize the grammar too much。 And some teachers do not know how to conduct the reading teaching in a scientific way。 The biggest problem lies in the lack of suitable reading materials。 The reading materials that the textbook provides are rather limited。 In the textbooks of PEP edition, there are only one or two reading materials (Read and write & Story time) in each unit。
1。2 The Significance of the Research
English has become a common language of the world nowadays。 English education has been improved continuously over the past two decades。 The issue of the National English Curriculum Standards (2001) indicated that English education was offered at the primary stage。 Then the implementation of the National English Curriculum Standards (2011) shows that English education has reached a relatively mature stage。 The new standard emphasizes the importance of developing students’ comprehensive abilities to use the language。 That is to say, the four basic skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) are of the equal importance in English learning。 Compared with the standards in 2001 in which focused more on the development of listening and speaking skills, the new standards come to accept the importance of developing reading skills。 Therefore, reading is playing an increasingly significant role in English learning now。 And the primary school students are required to get the second level at which students are able to read and understand simple stories with the help of pictures when they graduate from the primary school。 But due to the limited reading material and fixed teaching mode of reading, English reading teaching in lower grades especially in grade three is facing some predicaments because the majority of students in China begin to learn English in grade three。 It is true that students in grade three do not have enough accumulation of vocabularies and grammars。 So it is not easy for them to read。 And selecting suitable reading materials for them is also of great difficulty。 文献综述
