Chapter 1 Introduction
1。1 Research Background
The linguistic perspective gained its popularity among translation theorists in 1960s。 Usually, what mattered to them was the linguistic change, such as Eugene Nida, Peter Newmark and Roger Bell。 In Peter Newmark’s view, translation is a part of semantics research。 And Roger Bell regarded translation as a psychological mode。 With the deeper development of the translation research, the qualification and incompetence of the traditional translation theories were exposed to more and more translation theorists。 Under such circumstance, the functionalism approach, which was brought into the public eye in 1970s by German translation theorists。 Because of the spread of the functionalism approach, people paid more attention to texts, both source and target。 Therefore, the major purpose of the translation study changed from phrases to the text。 There are four significant scholars who made great contributions to this important theory。 They are Katharina Reiss, Hans J。 Vermeer, Justa Holz-Manttar and Christiane Nord。
According to the translation action theory, translation is human’s action。 Translators have specific purposes or Skopos。 In the theory of Skopostheorie, there are 3 rules- Skopos rule, coherence rule and fidelity rule。 The relationship between fidelity rule and coherence rule is that the former rule is subordinate to the latter rule while the 2 rules are both subordinate to the Skopos rule。 Given its weight in Skopostheorie, the purpose of translation has great influence on what methods and strategies the translators use。
It is of great value and importance to apply Skopostheorie to the translation of Chinese classic literature, which can provide a new perspective。 In the domestic studies of the translations of Xi You Ji, few are from this perspective。 Therefore, this essay is to make a comparative analysis of the translations of chapter title in Anthony C。 Yu’s and W。J。F。 Jenner’s Journey to the West with the purpose of giving explanation of different translations, reasonably analyzing and providing choices of different translation strategies and methods for further exploring the advantages of Skopostheorie。
