With the China’s entry to WTO and the swift development of Chinese economy, the commercial intercourse between China and other parts of the world has become more and more frequent。 Therefore foreign commodities and products have crowd in our market, including cosmetics。 Chinese living standard is improving dramatically, and demand for skin care products is rising rapidly, so a variety of cosmetics are greatly welcomed by female consumers but at the same time they make the customers feel dizzy。 Now, some well-known companies pay more attention to the translations of cosmetic instructions, because customers through the instructions to decide whether to buy the products。 In addition, a good translation can catch the consumers’ eyes and stimulate the consumption。 However, because of less attention to be paid to the translation of cosmetic instruction at home and abroad, the study of cosmetic translation is lagging behind other practical translations, such as tourist translation, advertisement translation and etc。 This paper based on the perspective of skopostheorie, to discuss how to use skopos rules in E-C translation of cosmetic instruction。 The purpose of this paper is to promote the translation of cosmetic instruction, delivering tidings correctly and faithfully。
2。 Literature Review
2。1 Historical Overview on skopos theory
2。1。1 Earlier View
As an academic basis in translation, Skopostheory is prevalent in the world, which is used to conduct the translation exercise of advertisement, move subtitles, news English and other types of content。 “Skopos theory”, simplified as “the end justifies the means” (Nord 124), was first brought out by Hans J。 Vermeer。
The term Skopos is commonly used to mean the objective of translation, and the term "Skopos" is from the Greek language。 As Vermeer said, any action has a purpose。 However, the word skopos mean the objective of the target text。 And it is the receiver, or rather the addresses, who is the chief component determining the target-text。
Besides, Vermeer also employed associated terms including “aim, intention function”。 “Aim” is the final outcome a media intends to obtain by an action, while “intention” is considered as “an aim-oriented plan of action” both the sender and the receiver, pointing toward an suitable way of creating or mastering the text 。(Nord 28) “function” means what a text means is or tended to mean from the receiver’s point of view (Nord 28)。 “function” and “intention” are absolutely different, for a “function” is of a text, while “intention” is of a person。
2。1。2 Related Studies on Skopos Theory at Home and Abroad
Traditional translation theories are usually under the auspices of “faithfulness”, highlighting the semantic equivalence between the source text and the target text。 They pay less attention to some other related factors in the process of translating。 However, functionalist translation theory, whose major theory is Skopos Theory, emerging in Germany in 1970s, offers a brand new angle of translation study and criticism, especially for the study of pragmatic translation。 A large amount of experts at home and abroad conduct such researches as the integration of Skopos Theory and translation practice, commentary study on Skopos Theory and so on。
