Abstract As we all know, Hong Lou Meng is one of the four great classical novels in China, it is also one shining star in the field of the world literature。 With the continuing development of Chinese literature ‘going out’, the study into the translation of classical Chinese literary works is becoming more and more important。 Domestication and foreignization are two major translating skills, in comparison, domestication focuses more on the following of the popular values of the target language, it uses transparent and smooth style to ease the strangeness of the original text to the utmost。 Foreignization refers to the deviation of the most popular values of the target language and keeps the foreignness of the original work to some extent。 This paper selects two most classical English versions of Hong Lou Meng and analyzes differences in the selection of words, paragraph structure and cultural awareness between these two English versions from the perspectives of domestication and foreignization。94119

From the analysis and comparison mentioned above, we can find that Yang Xianyi mainly uses ‘foreignization’ while David Hawkes prefers ‘domestication’。 However, both versions use several translating methods comprehensively instead of focusing on only one method。 Domestication and foreignization are dynamically unified, only the two are used together can we build a better translated work。

摘要《红楼梦》是中国四大名著之一，也是世界文学史上一颗璀璨的明星。随着“中华文化走出去”运动的不断发展，对以《红楼梦》为例的中国古典文学作品的翻译研究显得日益重要。归化异化是翻译中的两种主要策略，归化翻译重在遵循目标语文化目前的主流价值观，用透明晓畅的风格，最大程度上降低原文对读者的陌生感，而异化是指偏离目标语本土主流价值观，在一定程度上保留原文的异域性。本文选取杨宪益、戴乃迭以及大卫霍克斯的两本最经典的《红楼梦》译本，从归化和异化角度分析比较两个译本在选词、段落组织和译者文化背景差异等方面所带来的影响。

    通过比较和分析，我们可以发现杨宪益的译本主要采用异化的翻译方法，而霍克斯的版本主要采用的是归化，但是两个译本都综合采用了多种翻译方法，并没有局限于一种策略。归化和异化要相辅相成才能迸发出动人的火花，两者是动态统一的。
