摘 要英汉成语中动物形象的理解和翻译在语言学习和文化交流中占有重要地位。由于文化的相通性，一些动物形象在英汉文化中具有相似性，而一些动物形象因文化差异而拥有迥然不同的内涵特征，由此导致成语翻译的多种问题。本文从形象转换的角度出发，采用对比分析、归纳总结、举例说明等方法，探究英汉成语互译中动物形象的异同及转换现象和相应的翻译方法，包括直译法、意译法、直译加意译法、意译加注释法，从而论证了采用多种翻译策略能够提高成语翻译质量，再现生动灵活的动物形象。34545

Abstract
The understanding and translation of the animal images in English and Chinese idioms occupies an important position in the language learning and cultural communication. On the one hand, due to the connection between English and Chinese cultures, animal image tend to be the same or similar. On the other hand, English and Chinese belong to two different cultural systems, thus resulting in translation problems in the idiom’s mutual translation. This thesis explores the similarities and differences of animal images and the phenomenon of the images shift in translation of English and Chinese animal idioms from the perspective of the images shift by using comparative analysis, summarizing and interpretation method. As well the corresponding translation methods such as literal translation method, liberal translation method, literal translation and liberal translation, liberal translation and annotation method will be explored. This thesis demonstrates that using a variety of translation strategies flexibly can improve the quality of translation and can reappear the animal images in idioms vividly.

An Analysis of Image Shift in Translation of English and Chinese Animal Idioms
I. Introduction
Translation in terms of its essence is a kind of shifts. Transformation theory is the basic theory of translation. Carter Ford（1931-1995）who is a British translation theorist, using ordinary language theory studied transformation theory systematically and put forward two types of translations: level shifts and category shifts (85-93). The theory only studied the transformation from the aspect of language form, but neglected the semantic aspects of the transformation. In fact, the semantic transformation including semantic message and image transformation, as well image shift is an important form of semantic transformation. Image shift is a complex problem, especially in the translation of idioms. While animal idioms are too numerous to enumerate, the appropriate understanding of animal images in English and Chinese both in similarities and differences are critical. If we can make good use of this expression that will not only reach the acme of perfection, but also get the effect of icing on the cake. However, many scholars who are on the study of animal images at home and abroad, few of them have made discussion based on animal image shift, and the selection of animal idioms also lack systemic methods. In order to make the translation more accurate and easier for readers to understand and accept, we must understand the source of these animal idioms, also about cultural background and idiomatic usage. This thesis regards the animal idioms that in English and Chinese as research object, and explores the animal image shift in mutual translation, as well as the corresponding translation methods.
