1 Introduction
Wuthering Heights is English writer Emily Bronte’s only novel published in 1847, and it is regarded as a classic of English literature. The book tells a haunting love story between Heathcliff and Catherine and their tragic life. First published under Emily’s pseudonym Ellis Bell, the combination of its structure and elements of passion, mystery and doomed love as well as social commentary have made Wuthering Heights an enduring masterpiece. Set in 18th Century England when social and economic values were changing and land ownership did not always belong to the man who works on it, it is a world of patriarchal values mixed with the natural elements.
The Golden Cangue is a novella written by Eileen Chang in 1943. She is one of the best Chinese writers of the period. The story is about the main character CaoQiQiao. Her birth, love, marriage, hate, revenge, loneliness and her tragic life. Like the cangue, the heavy wooden collar worn by criminals and condemned people in China, the marriage of CaoQiQiao hangs around her neck, punishing her for a choice she made decades ago--a choice she has never ceased to bitterly regret.
This paper will focus on analyzing and comparing the tragic fate of Heathcliff and CaoQiQiao. The paper mainly falls into four parts, including the introduction of Wuthering Height and The Golden Cangue, the summary of Heathcliff and CaoQiQiao’s tragic fate, the background analysis and the comparison of their tragic life.
1.1 The Introduction of Wuthering Heights
Wuthering Heights is the only work of English female writer Emily Bronte and is regarded as one of the classic work in English Literature. The novel tells a story about Heathcliff, a gypsy orphan who was adopted by the old Earnshaw, the owner of Wuthering Heights, and the tragic love story between Heathcliff and Earnshaw’s daughter Catherine. Heathcliff and Catherine became intimate in their childhood, they shared happiness and sorrow together, but when the old Earnshaw died, Heathcliff and Catherine suffered from their brother Hindley Earnshaw’s cruelty. One day Heathcliff and Catherine walked to Thrushcross Grange to spy on the Lintons who were living there. But unfortunately they were discovered. Catherine was bitten by the Linton's dog and taken into the house to recuperate while Heathcliff was sent home. Catherine stayed with the Lintons until she fully recovered and was influenced by the Linton’s fine appearance and genteel manners. When she came back to Wuthering Heights, something changed between her and Heathcliff. Finally she decided to marry Linton and wished the marriage could help her and Heathcliff out of Hindley’s ill-treatment. However, Heathcliff left Wuthering Heights to make a fortune with a broken heart and decided to revenge on those people. Three years later, Heathcliff became rich, then he returned to Wuthering Heights to revenge.Through many kinds of means he succeeded in his revenge action during which Catherine died shortly after she gave birth to her daughter. And Heathcliff totally lost his mind after Catherine’s death and continued his revenge on the next generation: Catherine’s daughter--the little Catherine, his own son with Elizabeth Linton, and Hindley’s son--Harton. But the young generation’s love finally touched Heathcliff and he found back his humanity then gave up all his revenge and committed suicide. After his death he was buried with Catherine. Their souls finally could be together.
