Abstract It is never easy for foreign readers to bridge the gaps between cultures and make fully sense of ancient Chinese poems, presenting translators an enormous challenge. Personally, the core of a poem is the expression of the poet’s thoughts and feelings. So it will be the primary mission of translators. Moreover, we have to analyze the relations between poems and characters in Hongloumeng in order to achieve functional equivalence according to Eugene Nida’s Functional Equivalence Theory.
This essay is pided into five chapters with the purpose to evaluate the two versions and study the approaches in rendering factors of classic Chinese culture, represented by the moon, followers, etc., and conclude the translation strategies such as annotation, paraphrasing and omitting under the guidance of Functional Equivalence.
The first part serves as the introduction of the thesis; the second part covers a review of the development of Chinese-English translation and the analysis of the two typical cultural factors, imagery and formats; the third part discusses Functional Equivalence and comparative study, the methodologies of the thesis; in the next part, the author compares the renderings of culture factors in the two versions of Hongloumeng; the last part makes a conclusion of the thesis, hoping to help enriching English research on translation of Chinese culture elements.41945
