ABSTRACT Joseph Heller is one of the most famous writers of black humor and his novels are often based on real lives. By his special writing style, his works express not only the real life of the society in the United States, but his own protests and discontent with the real world. Catch-22 is such a novel. Against the background of the war, it describes some characters vividly, such as Yossarian. It also reflects the theme of contemporary society.46376

This paper aims to study the characters in Catch-22 and House of Cards from the perspective of alienation. In Catch-22, the absurd of the bureaucratic system distorts some people's normal minds and even their lives. It makes some people become indifferent as savage beasts, others become weak and helpless like insects, which also exists in House of Cards. The characters of the two works will be analyzed together to demonstrate that the ecological politics in Catch-22 can be used for reference and also has enlightenment on American TV series.
This thesis is made up of three parts except an introduction and a conclusion. The introduction briefs readers on the angle of the novel, the American TV series and their authors. The first part is literature review which tells the former studies on Catch-22 and House of Cards including the research on the origin of alienation, the meaning of ecological ethics and American politics. The second part is an comparative analysis of the characters into Man-Beasts. And the last part analyzes comparatively the characters who become into Man-Insects. These two part are studied to discuss the American politics. The conclusion summarizes the contents discussed in previous parts. The alienation of soul mirrors the absurdity of social reality. The alienation still exists in American political ecosystem.

摘 要约瑟夫•海勒是黑色幽默派最为著名的作家之一，他的小说通常都是以现实生活为基础进行创作，通过极具个性特征的写作方式，不仅真实地表现了美国社会的生活，而且还表达自己对现实世界的抗议和不满。《第二十二条军规》就是这样一本小说，它以战争背景，栩栩如生地刻画了约瑟林等人物形象，深刻地反映了当代社会的主题。
本文尝试探讨《第二十二条军规》中的人物异化以及通过其与《纸牌屋》中人物的对比研究说明它对现实政治仍有的借鉴意义。在《第二十二条军规》中，官僚制度的荒谬扭曲了一些人正常的心理乃至生命，使一部分人变得野蛮冷漠如同野兽，一部分人变得软弱无奈如同蝼蚁。同时在《纸牌屋》中我们也能看到类似的角色。
论文由五部分组成，包括引言，文献综述，人物异化中人兽的代表人物，人虫的代表人物以及结论。引言部分简要介绍约瑟夫•海勒的生平，《第二十二条军规》和《纸牌屋》。文献综述介绍以前人们对其的探究包括对异化，政治生态系统以及美国政治的研究。接下来分析《第二十二条军规》和《纸牌屋》中人物由人到兽的异化，以及由人到虫的异化，由此探讨美国政治生态。结论部分是对整篇论文的总结，异化的灵魂折射出荒诞的社会现实，指出异化反应仍然存于美国政治生态中。
