Abstract Eco-translatology is a newly developed translation theory firstly put forward by famous professor Hu Gengshen, which regards the principle of  Darwin’s biological evolution as its theoretical foundation, such as  “natural selection” and “survival of the fittest”and so on. The principle of “three dimensions” is one of the most important standards of translation and evaluation, which is derived from the theory of eco-translatology. So far, it has been employed to the translation of film subtitling, public signs, literary works and so on. Therefore based on this translation theory, this thesis compares and analyzes the two English versions of the famous Chinese writer Zhu Ziqing’s Bei Ying through analysis of a number of examples, respectively Zhang Peiji’s The Sight of Father’s Back and Yang Xianyi and Gladys Yang’s My Father’s Back. Through analysis, it is found that in the process of translating, a translator should adapt to the translational eco-environment on the dimensions of language, culture, and communication in order to reach an appropriate version. Through comparison, a conclusion can be drawn that the two English versions both have their own features and are worthy of studying and that Eco-translatology plays a guiding role in the translation work. 53659

    1. Introduction

Translation plays an important role in social development of human beings. In recent decades, translation studies has experienced linguistic turn, cultural turn, and now headed to the eco-translatology. Prose is the essence of Chinese literature. When translating prose, the translator must have a profound literary accomplishment, and fully understand words and sentences which contain Chinese special meanings. Bei Ying, one important essay written by famous writer Zhu Ziqing, is very simple and vivid, singing the praises of paternal love. So far, there are quite a few academic articles on the translation of Bei Ying from different perspectives; however, few scholars have explored from the perspective of eco-translatology. This thesis is intended to probe into the realization of eco-translatology in the translation of the essay Bei Ying, by means of a comparative study of the two English versions from the lingusitic dimension, cultural dimension and communicative dimension. Through such analysis, the thesis tries to examine how the two translators made adaptation and selection in their translational eco-environment, and where they made transformations.
