2.1 The Definition of Image

“Image”, eikon, or imago “originally meant no more than picture, imitation, or copy”, a device useful for the purpose of enargia. The process of making the reader seem to see something. Simply speaking, “image” is a picture formed in the mind. The word “image” in English is used in various senses. To begin with, there is the inconographic sense of the word, which is an image as a physical object. Then there is the metaphoric sense, as we speak of the “very image of truth”. These two senses are not what this thesis is concerned about. Then there are the literary senses, which are frequently used in literary criticism.

“On one hand, image is used to denote a verbal expression that evokes a mental picture or recalls a physical sensation, not necessarily visual. On the other hand, the word is also used to mean an expression, such as metaphor, smile, etc, that involves two elements.”

As to the above quoted definition, the word “image” contains two meanings expressions that recall physical sensations and expressions that involve two objects, namely, “tenor” and “vehicle”.
