Abstract In recent years, there has been growing attention and enthusiasm for sports events, especially the international ones. As a consequence, E-C translation of sports news is in urgent need to satisfy the audiences’ demand. Usually, a good headline plays a crucial role in capturing readers’ attention. But since English sports headlines have their own characteristics, the E-C translation is difficult to some extent. Hence, it’s of critical importance to focus on E-C translation of sports news headlines and better impart the message delivered by the original ones to Chinese readers. Despite the fact that great efforts have been made to this research area, there is still much room for improvement. This paper aims to study comprehensively and systematically on English sports headlines translation from the perspective of functionalist translation theory, hoping to make some contributions to this field. 71701

The paper begins with a brief introduction of functionalist translation theory and an overall review of the previous achievements on E-C translation of sports news headlines. Then, the second chapter describes the features of both Chinese and English sports news headlines with living examples. Chapter three is a functionalist analysis of sports news headlines in which the author explores the functions and skopos of sports news headlines. Finally, the paper advances some approaches to the translation of sports news headlines.

摘   要当今中国，人们对于体育的关注与热情越来越高。为了市场需求，国内新闻媒体通常需要将大量的英语体育新闻汉译。俗话说“看报看眼”，而标题正是新闻的“眼睛”。一个好的新闻标题往往起着吸引眼球、激起读者阅读兴趣的作用。但英语体育新闻标题有其特殊的文体特点，翻译起来有一定的难度。因此重视英语体育新闻标题的汉译，从而更好地将原英语体育新闻标题的信息传达给中国读者显得尤为重要。总体而言，对于结合功能翻译理论探讨英语体育新闻标题的汉译，前人已在不同角度和层面取得了许多成果，但缺乏系统性研究。本文拟以功能翻译理论为视角全面系统地研究英语体育新闻标题的汉译，以期对该领域的研究有一定的参考价值和贡献。

首先，本文对功能翻译理论进行了系统的介绍并全面回顾了前人在该领域所取得的研究成果以及体育新闻标题汉译的研究现状。 第二部分，通过实例描述分析中英文体育新闻标题的特点。第三部分，在功能翻译理论的框架下探求体育新闻标题的功能和目的。最后，在前文分析的基础上，总结出英语体育新闻标题汉译的方法。
