A Study on the Anxiety of Chinese College Students in English Public Speech---A Case in University
Chapter One Introduction
1。1 General Statement of the Paper
With the spread of English over the world, there are a large number of competitions of English public speech in institutions of all levels of the country。 It is obvious that English public speech not only can show the university students’ language proficiency but also more importantly, it embodies a person's thinking and ability。 Generally speaking, English public speech contest will reflect English teaching level of colleges and universities。 Gradually, Chinese college students pay more attention to the English speech contest because it promote every young inpidual student's ability。 However, it is easy to find that there are many factors that affect the presentation of the speech, for instance, personal ability of English spoken, states of mind, speech writing skills and etc。 These factors will directly or indirectly affect students’ performance on the stage when they give an English speech。To find the difficulties and anxieties of the students when they have a English public speech, the author does a survey on University。 By the survey on students of University, the author finds that there are five aspects that cause the anxiety of English speech, which are personality, knowledge reserves, preparing elements of speech, the environmental factors and the experiences。 Among them, the personality and knowledge reserves take a large proportion。 According to the results of the survey and analysis of the study, the author proposes some solutions to help students stabilize their emotions。
1。2 The Significance of This Study
Public speech is a form of speech that speaker publish his or her speech to the public audience。 It is can simply defined that speaking in public。 Speakers make the ongoing and formal speeches to the target audience。 It is well known that public speech is gradually attracted more and more attentions in today’s society。 Whether you give a presentation in the classroom, or teachers give a lecture, or you make a statement in the general assembly of a company, these are all public speech。 So it is more and more important to improve the levels and enhance the skills of the public speech。
In recent years, to meet the needs of promoting foreign relations and social development, people from all walks of life have paid more attention to the comprehensive proficiency of the college students in applying English。 Also English public speech became more and more popular。 It is a practical activity that improves college students’ English language proficiency and logical thinking and communicating ability。 English public speech not only shows the university students’ language proficiency but also more importantly, it embodies a person's thinking and ability。 More generally, English public speech contest reflects English teaching level of colleges and universities。 By combination of observations in aspects of levels of students’ spoken English, states of mind, knowledge reserves and stage experience, English speech can select a group of excellent college students who actually have outstanding abilities。 With the popularity of English public speech, Chinese college students have more and more anxieties in English public speech。 So it is necessary to have this study to find the anxieties and solve them。
1。3 Overall Structure of the Thesis
The present thesis is pided into five chapters。 Chapter one is an introduction, including a general statement, and the significance of the study not only in college class but also for college students themselves。 Chapter two is a literature review, which are about foreign research and domestic research on the study of speech anxiety。 Chapter three describes the research design, including subjects of the the study,specific questions of research questionnaire。 Chapter four presents the results and discussions of the study in University。 The last chapter summarized the major findings of the study and listed the solutions to the anxieties in English public speech。 The author also gave some recommendations for future studies。
