Chapter One Introduction
The chapter is the introduction of the paper, including three parts: the first is definition of the vocabulary and English Vocabulary Teaching in primary schools, the second is the importance of vocabulary learning, the third is current situation of English Vocabulary Teaching in primary schools in China and the purpose of the study。
1。1 The definition of vocabulary and English vocabulary teaching in primary schools
The word “vocabulary” has multiple meanings。 From the perspective of linguistics and applied linguistics, vocabulary refers to all the words and grammar in a language。 From the perspective of English lexicology, all the words in English form the vocabulary of the language。 According to the opinions of the scholars, English vocabulary is considered to be composed of a variety of meaningful words and phrases。 According to the standard of Chinese primary school English curriculum and its requirements for English vocabulary, English vocabulary in primary school can be defined as consisting of pronunciation and meaning of words and containing the English language like idioms。
Hu Dongchun, a famous English educationist in China, once defined the vocabulary teaching in a broad sense as the whole English teaching。 From his points of view, English vocabulary teaching includes five aspects, namely, the teaching of culture, communication, thinking, learning and language。 Wang Duqing believes that English vocabulary teaching is the teaching process and activity design which takes vocabulary as its teaching content and views the understanding and application of vocabulary as the teaching objectives。 Thus, it explains that English vocabulary teaching is not to solely teach vocabulary, but is the teaching that involves other relevant elements in the language。 To sum up, according to the actual situation in primary school English teaching, The English vocabulary teaching in primary can be defined as the teaching process and design activity which accord to the pupils’ age characteristics and laws of English teaching, take primary school English vocabulary as the teaching content and view students’ understanding and initial comprehensive language application as the teaching objectives。
1。2 The importance and research purposes of vocabulary learning
Vocabulary is the flesh and blood of the language, just like the steel and cement of a building。 Without steel and cement, no building can be built。 Similarly, how could it be possible to learn English well if one does not have enough vocabulary? English is an international common language whose importance has increasingly drawn people’s attention。 Because, we can’t ignore the existence of a giant。 And the foundation of constructing the English building is the vocabulary。
The size of vocabulary has a direct influence on the language expression ability of a foreign language learner, and it also influences the richness and accuracy of his thought expression。 Therefore, for English learners, valuing the accumulation of vocabulary is a stepping stone in language learning。
Vocabulary learning and its application have become the necessary conditions for foreign language learners to improve their English language skills, while establishing effective vocabulary-based classroom teaching model is the essential condition to help students effectively carry out vocabulary acquisition。 Therefore, this topic will explore how to use a variety of teaching methods so as to enable students to remember more words in limited class time and improve the quality of teaching。文献综述
