A Corpus-Based Study of High-Frequency Verbs in International Economic News
—With Reference to “Global Times” and “New York Times”
Abstract The nativization of English in China has been controversial and relatively little research has probed into particular lexical items on a corpus basis。 This corpus-based study aims to investigate high-frequency verbs occurring in China’s and American English newspapers in an attempt to answer issues concerning the nativized use of high-frequency verbs。 The research questions are: 1) Is there any difference of high-frequency verbs between China’s English newspaper and America’s English newspaper? 2) What are the nativization high-frequency verbs in China's English newspapers? The major findings are: 1)The word “say”, “make”, “take”, “become”, “get”, “see”, “go”, “give”, “find” are the high frequency verbs in both Chinese and American English newspaper, but they still have quite difference in frequency; The word “make”, “take”, “become”, “use”, “work”, “develop”, “increase”, “grow”, “hold”, “build”, “provide”, “expect”, “show”, “start” are overused in Chinese English newspaper。 2)The collocational patterns of the Chinese English newspaper reflect China's economic construction and social development obviously which is not conspicuous in American English newspaper。 This study clarified these two questions in order to guide the proper use of “China English”, so as to make the communication smoothly and effectively and spread the Chinese culture better。84544

摘 要英语在中国的本土化问题一直备受争议,相关实证性研究较少。本研究从中国英语报章和美国英语报章中的高频动词入手,运用语料库的研究方法,总结高频动词在经济新闻中的使用情况,试图回答以下两个问题:中国英语报章和美国英语报章在高频动词的使用上有哪些异同?中国英语报章中的高频动词显示出那些本土化特征?本文研究发现:(1)在中美英语报章中“say”, “make”, “take”, “become”, “get”, “see”, “go”, “give”, “find” 等均属于高频动词,但在使用频率上表现出明显的差异;“make”, “take”, “become”, “use”, “work”, “develop”, “increase”, “grow”, “hold”, “build”, “provide”, “expect”, “show”, “start” 等动词在中国英语报章的使用频率明显高于在美国英语报章中的使用频率。(2)中国英语报章的动词搭配在一定程度上反映了中国在社会经济方面发展迅速,而这一特征在美国英语报章中的体现并不明显。希望本研究能为国内的新闻工作者正确使用英语提供一定的借鉴,使得他们和受众的交流能顺利而有效地进行,以更好地传播中国文化。
