— With Reference to “Global Times” and “New York Times”
I。 Introduction
The past two decades have witnessed the emergence of numerous studies on world Englishes, most of which focus on the identification and description of global varieties of English。 At the same time, some localized cultural elements are being incorporated into English language with the spread of English in China, which is unavoidable。 And then, the nativization of English in China is generally acknowledged and has aroused great interest among scholars at home and abroad。文献综述
There are considerable studies in the field of globalization and localization of English。 Most of them are the descriptions of how different English variants develop or generate as well as what the specific manifestations of them are。 However, “China English”, i。e。 English used in China’s Context, has still been controversial in research。 Scholars in China have focused on the concept of “China English” with different attitudes and the disputes over Chinese English have lasted for twenty years。 The achievement of both diachronic and synchronic descriptions of world Englishes and China English is flourishing (Kirkpatrick & Xu, 2002;Li,1993)。 However, the research in the application and its approaches as well as specific methods of certain English variant, especially China English,is rather poor。 It is quite necessary to get a clear understanding of the status quo of China English by native and non-native speakers in China and abroad。
Newspaper plays an important role in modern society, with the language mirroring the society objectively and effectively。 It supplies us with the latest news and keeps us informed of what has happened locally and internationally。 Economic news reflects the economic development of a region。 The language of newspaper is characterized by timeliness, accuracy, brevity and clarity。 “Global Times”, as one of the most influential English newspaper in China, is worthy of research in the aspect of language use to reveal the nativization of English in China。 Thus, we can get a lot by comparing it with “The New York Times” - the most popular newspaper in America。 This study will take a more comprehensive discussion in both Chinese and American context based on two corpus, in the hope of bringing together fragmented arguments and evidence。 And this study aims to investigate high-frequency verbs occurring in “Global Times” and “New York Times” in an attempt to answer issues concerning the nativized use of high-frequency verbs in the Chinese context and the difference of the use of high-frequency verbs between Chinese and native speakers at the same time。
