1 Introduction
As we all know, from the traditional point of view of linguistics, language, as a cultural structure, can be appropriately pided into three categories: Phonetics, Vocabulary and Syntax, with Phonetics being the essence of language. Usually, Phonetics is regarded as the material shell of the language, while the very phonemes are considered the origin of a language, and language acquisition is supposed to be initiated with Phonetics teaching and learning. That is to say, in the whole process of language acquisition, phonetics learning comes before everything else. Phonetics learning is not only focused by language learning beginners, but also focused as an important study field by language teachers, especially by teachers who teach foreign languages.
But as long as English phonetics teaching practice is concerned, the International Phonetic Alphabet has taken over everything for a long while as the mainstream of English phonetics teaching and learning. While in recent years, a new branch of English phonetics teaching--Phonics has been introduced into English phonetics study in English speaking countries and into China, too, and now it is widely spread. In fact, in the English-speaking countries, children memorize words just through this very new phonetic teaching approach, called “Phonics”, which means, by means of Phonics study, children who are picking up the language do not have to recite the exact pronunciation of a word the way the International Phonetic Alphabet teaches, while they can simply “pick up” the pronunciations of words themselves with their experiences through Phonics learning.
So Phonics, currently, is popular as one of the English phonetic teaching methods in English phonetics learning. It is not only good for the children in English-speaking countries to learn the English pronunciation and spelling the easy way, but also good for the beginners of English learning who speak English as a second language to learn quick the rules of English pronunciations and the spelling skills as well. In order to train learners' intuitive sense of English pronunciation, and subsequently enable them to read out when seeing the word and write correctly when hearing the word, this method mainly helps to elicit an intuitive correspondence on the learners’ part to the pronunciation of the word and its spelling in its own right. The key note here is that there is a natural commensuration or equilibration relation between the usual phonemes in the English word and their articulately distinct speech sounds to match them. That is the working principle of the natural Phonics, and that explains why Phonics can enable the beginners to know how to pronounce an English word at its first sight, and that tells what makes the natural Phonics applicable in the English phonetics teaching practice. Thus, it can lead the learners to study and to know about the mystery of the regular letter combinations in English word formation called phonemes found in the structure of each English words as well as their different pronunciation summation for the word, even the different pronunciations found in the very few variants of certain phonemes. And with such learning experiences accruing on the part of the learners, the so-called natural Phonics is expected to help students to master the regular rules of English word pronunciation as well as the usual spelling formation of words in a relaxed and fun learning atmosphere. 英文自然拼读法实用性考证(2):http://www.youerw.com/yingyu/lunwen_10893.html
