In recent years, Phonics has been preferred by more and more teachers and parents due to its function mentioned above. And an increasing number of people think that the method—Phonics can solve many problems of English learning, such as the problems of the interest in learning on the part of the learners, the problems of their ability in word spelling, the problems of their ability in listening, the problems of their ability in reading comprehension, etc. However, to the English beginners who speak English as a second language, whether the method works on them well enough, or whether the method has its scientific as well as its practical applicability, or even whether the method is worth being spread widely are remained questionable, awaiting being further studied. In the aspects to be studied in this paper, there are many famous books published in history. A large number of scholars have discussed and analyzed this issue. Their comments have been listed as follows. But the focus of this paper in unique, though.

In the essay The Application of Phonics in Primary School English Teaching, the writer thinks that using Phonics in the phonetic and word teaching is a good method for lower-grade pupils to be free from the heavy burden of learning by rote (高敏, 2005). Students who master this method and grasp the correspondent relationship between the regular sound morpheme and its spelling form will be able to read by themselves. Also, they can study and memorize words more easily but with less efforts. Just like what has been described from Blevins 1996 in The Teaching Professionals of Phonics: Phonics, with the relationship between the sound and the form introduced, is to teach students the universal relation between sound and form to let them understand and spell words. This kind of ability in understanding words is vital to the success of language acquisition.

In the essay Discussion on Naural Phonics Application Errors, the writer thinks that we, as English learners, should be made aware that: (1) Phonics is suitable for the learners of any age. (2) Using Phonics can solve any phonetic problems. (3)The phoneticization is helpful for learning Phonics. (4) Phonics can enhance the ability of reading comprehension. And the writer think Phonics is practical for us to learn English (冷毅,2012).

In the essay Discussion on the Positive Role of Affective Factors in the English Teaching, the writer thinks that the affective factors affect students in learning English in terms of motivation, interest, confidence and will. Indeed, Phonics can increase a sense of success, decrease frustrations and enhance the interest in learning English (邱瑞君,2007). Therefore, phonetics plays a positive role in English teaching.

As is mentioned above, every scholar has their own opinions. Some scholars think Phonics is a practical teaching method and worth being spread, while other scholars think this new method is not so good or helpful for our English beginners to master English well. So, on this issue, further study is needed. And the practical application of Phonics will be studied further through some actual case analyses here in the paper.

2    Current Status of Phonics in English Learning
Since the turn of 20th century, Phonics has been widely used in primary education and teaching literacy through the English-speaking world, especially in the US, UK, and Australia. But, what’s the background of Phonics? How about its current influence on the whole world?

2.1    The Background of Phonics
The term Phonics, proposed during the 19th century and then into the 1970s, was used as a synonym or a hyponymy of phonetics. The use of the term in reference to the method of the phonetic teaching of English language can be dated to 1901 by the Oxford English Dictionary. Phonics derives from the Roman text, The Doctrine of Littera, which states that a letter (littera) consists of a sound (potestas), a written symbol (figura) and a name (nomen). This relation between word sound and form is the backbone of traditional Phonics (Net.1). Therefore, the word formation of Phonics itself here reveals its working principles. 英文自然拼读法实用性考证(3):http://www.youerw.com/yingyu/lunwen_10893.html
