A Comparative Study on the Translation of Nicknames in Shui Hu Zhuan from the Perspective of Cognitive Translation
Chapter One Introduction
1.1 Research Background and Research Questions
Nickname enjoys a long history both at home and abroad but the study of it arose only years ago. For so many years, nickname had been ignored due to its position in the language, as Lu Weizhong (2003, p.13) put it: “nickname is not a mainstream of linguistic culture.” However, nickname contains a wealth of culture. In some degree, it is a significant part of a culture. Besides, in novels, nickname plays an important role in shaping characters and reveals social conditions at that time. That’s why nickname attracts so much attention and the study of it emerges.
To some extent, nickname has been a symbol of Shui Hu Zhuan. In this novel, nickname plays a much more important role than it does in others novels such as Romance of the Three Kingdoms. In recent years, lots of papers on the study of nicknames in Shui Hu Zhuan have been published, such as A Cognitive Study of Nicknames of the108 Heroes in the Outlaws of the Marsh written by Shu Dingfang, etc. However, compared with the reputation of Shui Hu Zhuan, more studies on nickname translation are urgently required. Besides, much more theories should be added to guide the translation of nicknames. Only in this case can characters in this novel be vividly brought into foreign versions, and Chinese culture could be appreciated widely.
Metaphor lives in our life throughout the history. The study of metaphor may be pided into two stages. In the former stage, metaphor was regarded as a style in speech and writing, limited as a rhetoric. In the later stage, since the publication of Metaphors We Live By written by Lakoff &Johnson, metaphor became the necessary part of conceptual system. Nowadays, metaphor has been a hot topic for many fields including philosophy, psychology, linguistics and so on.
Shu Dingfang argued that “…all the nicknames of the 108 heroes are metaphors or metonymies.” (2009)Besides, nicknames in Shui Hu Zhuan are also a phenomenon of cognition and social culture. These provide a basis for this study on nicknames translation in Shui Hu Zhuan from the perspective of cognition linguistics.
This paper aims to conduct a comparative study on the translation of nicknames from the perspective of cognitive translation in two English versions of Shui Hu Zhuan, Pearl S. Buck’s and Sidney Shapiro’s. Two research questions will be addressed:
