    Ⅰ. Introduction

    Different countries have different languages and cultures. As an important component of culture, language is the vehicle of culture (Yang 29). There is close relationship between each other. For many years, foreign language teaching of middle school students in China has always focused on student’s linguistic competence, such as grammar and vocabulary. And the teacher often ignored the cultural education in English teaching. Students are often trying to  impose  the characteristics of the mother tongue in English learning. It may cause wrong context understanding. This caused students making mistakes while learning English. For example, Chinese English learners are frequently puzzled with English metaphor in an English discourse. In addition, the middle school students in China make numerous and various Chinese-like English in English writing. It is due to effects of mother language on their English writing process. Chinese students has some specific psychological feelings in English learning because of their certain cultural background, which can influence their English learning. The research of cultural barriers in English learning will helps us to learn the language better. Language and culture are closely connected with each other. To learn a foreign language, one must know something about its culture. In practical English teaching, Chinese English learner can not have a good command of English unless he overcomes the cultural barriers in learning English. So, it is very essential to deal with the relationship correctly between cultural education and English language teaching.
    For middle school students, to learn English well is not easy. They will be confronted with a lot of difficulties and obstacles in the language learning. For example: the difference of spelling, the difference of pronunciation habits, the difference of grammar and the differences of their culture and thinking models, and so on. As mentioned previously, the difference of spelling, pronunciation and grammar can be overcome by continuously diligent practice, and the difference of culture is difficult to overcome. Because culture is a kind of value and significance system commonly held by a group or society. Lacking of the knowledge of the British and American culture will often lead to cultural interference and cultural shock on the part of the students who are studying authentic English material. People who share the same culture form a culture group. It is the result after many years of experiences, and it is not possible to learn or overcome by other races in a short period of time. So, how to overcome all these obstacles and bridge the literacy pide is very difficult. That is why Chinese people can speak English fluently, in English speaking countries will also meet “culture shock”. Lacking of the knowledge of the British and American culture will often lead to cultural interference and cultural shock on the part of the students who are studying authentic English material.
