2001 saw a round of curriculum reform in the Chinese Mainland and the promulgation of English Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education. Ten years later, the Chinese Curriculum Standards had been amended and the new version, which is entitled English Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education (2011 Edition), started to be implemented. Meanwhile, in the Chinese Taiwan, the English Curriculum Guidelines was also issued in 2000, which was put into practice f文献综述 or Grade 1-9 Curriculum. After several amendments, the newest version of the English Curriculum Guidelines of Taiwan came out in 2008.
The Chinese Mainland shares the similar culture background with the Chinese Taiwan, such as the foreign language learning environment. Similarities exist in English curriculum standards for compulsory education between these two regions. However, there are still differences between the two documents.
The purpose of this study is to analyze, compare and contrast English curriculum standards for compulsory education between the Chinese Mainland and Taiwan in terms of the overall structure, the curriculum rationale, the curriculum goals and objectives, the performance standards and the implementation proposals.
