1。 Introduction
In British literature history, there appear a series of literary works set on desert islands。 In these works, authors purposely put the protagonists on isolated islands and take them as story backgrounds, expressing the themes。 And this kind of works is called desert island literature。 The desert islands are not only the external condition stories depend on but also the critical core of plot development。 The narrative mode of this kind of literature always abides by the principle of “trilogy”- being trapped, then taking adventures and finally getting rescued。 Being cut off from the outside world provides the characters in the works with a great place to toughen up both physically and mentally without constraints of law, morality and civilization。 And the experience of exploring in a closed and independent world highlights living situations and spiritual world of people in different times and conveys different themes。
Among various distinctive and unique features of desert island literature, the absence of females is undoubtedly the most outstanding one。 If we take a sweeping view on desert island literature, female characters can be hardly found。 So it’s not hard to see that British desert island literature more or less carries male-chauvinistic color since its birth。 Somewhat extreme as it seems to be to generally criticize traditional desert island literary writers as jingoists, it’s indeed a typical phenomenon that females are repressed, or even absent in these literary works。 In this thesis, the author will concretely analyze the absence of females in British desert island literature from three classical novels in different times; they are respectively Robinson Crusoe written by Daniel Defoe in the 18th century, Coral Island by R。 M。 Ballantyne in the 19th century, and Lord of Flies by William Golding in the 20th century。
