Abstract Walden, is a household classic。 It is written by Henry David Thoreau who is a typical representative of American Transcendentalism。 It has been a masterpiece in American literature。 Walden incontrovertibly enables Thoreau to win his spurs。 The process of canonization of this book is directly related with American historical and cultural context from late 19th to early 20th century。 Based on the construct of constructivism, it can be found there are three prominent forces furthering Walden to become one of the classics and likewise Walden retranslation bandwagon takes its presence in the literature sphere。 The three extremely material forces are as follows: re-cognizance of canonization in American history of literature, evolution of Eco-criticism theory, pursuit of spiritual life in modern China。   94005

1。 Introduction

Walden composed by American writer Henry David Thoreau is a masterpiece in the history of American literature。 Henry David Thoreau is the 19th century American transcendentalist writer and likewise preservation thinker。 Hitherto, there are more than 20 versions and this work has been translated into 40 perse languages in the same breath。 Former recorded statistics have shown that there appear miscellaneous translations about Walden, all of which are unique with their own typical characteristics and features, in particular the renderings of Xu Chi and Dai Huan being popular and prevalent amongst the populace and the progress of retranslation evinces its unsurpassed and unrivaled pith in the modern times。 Simultaneously, predecessors who are singularly fascinated with Thoreau have been delving into Walden with might and main, Chinese scholar like Huang Jian and Han Dexing, Western savants such as Linck C Johnson and Thomas Wentworth Higginson, Henry Walcott Baynton。 Based on the research of the predecessors but different from their research, this thesis as a result, is going to probe into several reasons spurring Walden to be canonized in a singularly comprehensive way and in the same time form a different perspective, which will make a significant and telling difference to the research in Walden subsequently。 In the contemporary epoch, the most important and riveting aspect lies in that this research is immensely consequential and substantial granted that it will have a thorough appreciation of Walden in a particular way, forward readers further comprehension and indisputably have a long-lasting bearing on the posterity。
