I。 Introduction

1。1 Rationale of the Study

It is well-known that language and culture are closely linked to each other。 Widely recognized as the crystallization of language, idioms have  become a hot topic among the researchers with their universal appeal。 It has been noticed that, until now, much of the previous works on the study of English and Chinese idioms has often been concerned with animal idioms, plant idioms, historical idioms, etc。 However, few studies on idioms have been related with ocean and ship。 Thus, more incisive studies should be made on Chinese and English idioms related with ocean and ship。 

Furthermore, China is a landlocked country。 Although there are many coastal cities, most of them locate in the southeast of the country。 Thus, compared with Britain researchers, Chinese researchers pay less attention to idiom study related with ocean and ship。 Whereas, 71% of the area of the Earth's surface is ocean, and China has more than 300 million square kilometers of blue territory。 The ocean is the treasury resource of human existence and development, and the marine economy is the world's new economic growth point。 The 18th Party Congress report clearly put forward the idea of building a "maritime power" for the first time, emphasizing the comprehensive development and utilization of marine resources, deeming the marine economy as an important strategic task for the country's economic and social development。 The construction of marine power not only provides a powerful spiritual motivation and intellectual support, but also determines the success or failure of a national marine construction and development, and it has great practical significance and far-reaching historical meaning。 Therefore study on Chinese and English idioms is extremely urgent。论文网

1。2 Significance of the Study

Idioms are often not easy to handle, and harder to use correctly。 To certain degree we can say that the proper use of idiom is a mark of an inpidual’s command of the language。 Study on Chinese and English idioms related with ocean and ship not only helps language learners to understand and utilize idioms more properly, but also helps learners to know more about the background of the study, leading language learners to do more researches on the deeper reasons which cause the cultural differences in Chinese and English idioms related with ocean and ship。 

Moreover, in order to achieve the strategic purpose of marine power development, and to increase the value of marine culture industry, the essay studies the idioms related with ocean and ship under different cultural backgrounds, and marine culture attaches great importance to economic development and certain corresponding fields。 Constantly enhancing the academic research level and promoting the development of collaborative innovation play a vital role in academic circles of marine industry。

1。3 Outline of the Thesis 

 This essay studies the differences between Chinese and English idioms related with ocean and ship from a rather detailed perspective。 The first part introduces English and Chinese idioms, connotation and literal meaning of the idioms related with ocean and ship。 In this part introduction is elaborated from the definition of English and Chinese idioms。 The second part illustrates the comparison of English and Chinese idioms related with ocean and ship in terms of different corresponding phenomenon。 The third part analyzes the reasons of difference from the perspective of Western geographical differences, the living habits and the Western history and culture。 Finally is the conclusion and summary, which accounts for a less improvement of this study including the Chinese and English idioms related with ocean and ship。
