Abstract With the increasing of the international cultural communication, taboos are found to play an important role in it。 Especially in the communication process between Chinese and English, the influence caused by taboos has been more prominent。 What’s taboo? What are the features of taboos? What are the similarities and differences between Chinese and English taboos? How to avoid the cultural conflicts caused by taboos? This thesis is designed to answer these questions。 By comparing the taboos in Chinese and English, this thesis will reflect the cultural similarities and differences。 In the end, some suggestions on avoiding such cultural conflicts will be given。75861

1。 Introduction
Taboo is also spelled as Tabu which originates in Polynesian island。(Kramsch, 2000:10) It has been used as a common word in Anthropology and seen as a social phenomenon。 The term taboo was first noted by Captain James Cook during his visit to Tonga in 1770。 Although the word taboo is originated in Polynesian, they have been actually found in all nations and societies。 The existing of taboos accounts for a history and cultural root and under different social and cultural backgrounds the contents and formalities of taboos differs largely。
Taboos can refer to the subject that people avoid, because taboos often make them feel embarrassed and afraid。 It can also refer to the social custom or rules that should be broke。 Generally, taboos can be pided into to categories, language taboos ans non-language taboos。论文网
